In accordance with the requirements of the Notice of the General Office of the China Association for Science and Technology on Conducting the Establishment of National Science Popularization Education Bases for 2021–2025 (CAST General Office Pu Zi〔2021〕No. 26), upon evaluation, Sanqingshan UGGp is proposed to be recognized as a National Science Popularization Education Base.

Sanqingshan UNESCO Global Geopark

Sanqingshan UGGP covers an area of 433 square kilometers, including the Main Sanqingshan UGGp Area, Huaiyushan Area and Zihu Area. The main peak, Yujing Peak, rises to an altitude of 1,819.9 meters. The mountain is named “Sanqingshan” (Three Pure Ones Mountain) because its three steep peaks — Yujing, Yuxu and Yuhua — resemble the three supreme Taoist deities: Yuqing, Shangqing and Taiqing, sitting solemnly on the mountain top.Admitted into the UNESCO Global Geopark Network in September 2012, Sanqingshan UGGp is a natural and geographical region in southeastern China dominated by Mesozoic granite and Proterozoic–Paleozoic strata, featuring abundant geological heritages and unique geomorphological phenomena.

The Geopark is Located at the junction of the Yangtze and Cathaysia ancient plates, it records nearly 800 million years of Earth’s evolutionary history. It preserves precious geological relics of great value in sedimentology, stratigraphy, petrology, structural geology and geomorphology, as well as rare biological communities with an evolutionary history of more than 200 million years. It boasts complete, typical and concentrated granite microlandforms, making it a representative example of granite peakforest landscapes worldwide. It’s more than 1,000year history of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature has left the Geopark a rich cultural heritage. Among them, the ancient architectural ruins designed in accordance with the Taoist philosophy of “Harmony between Man and Nature” are honored as “the OpenAir Museum of Ancient Chinese Taoist Architecture”.

Study Tour Base

Sanqingshan UGGp has been enriching its science connotation by improving various science popularization and education platforms, including the Sanqingshan Geological Museum, interpretive signs, tour guides, geopark book series, and scientific tour maps. It has enhanced the interactivity and educational value of museum exhibits by utilizing existing resources, and developed a variety of science-themed cultural and creative products based on the Geopark’s unique values. The Geoprk has continuously organized professional training for its staff, and carried out selection and training for science popularization volunteers to encourage wider public participation.

It regularly offers geological science courses, essay contests, speech competitions and other activities on campus to make school-based science education a routine practice. By actively cooperating with universities, colleges and educational institutions, Sanqingshan UGGp has built a multi-functional study tour base for college internships, science education for primary and secondary school students, and study tours for the general public.
