May 12, 2022 marked China’s 14th National Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day. Centered on the theme Reduce Disaster Risks, Safeguard Our Beautiful Homeland, Sanqingshan UNESCO Global Geopark rolled out an integrated online-and-offline science outreach campaign to popularize disaster prevention knowledge, improve practical emergency capabilities and reinforce public safety. Sun Zheng, Deputy Director of the Geopark Administrative Committee, together with representatives from member institutions of the local Disaster Reduction Committee including the Emergency Management Bureau, Social Development Bureau, Public Security Sub-bureau and Meteorological Bureau, took part in the event.
At Sanqingshan School, organizers encouraged teachers and students to join the activity. Through informational leaflet distribution, on-site Q&A sessions and hands-on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) drills, specialists shared prevention tips covering natural disasters, workplace safety, traffic and fire protection as well as gas leakage risks. They also demonstrated emergency evacuation and sheltering skills to help participants master self-rescue and mutual-aid capabilities via practical exercises.
Well-received by all faculty and students, the campaign greatly enhanced their awareness of risk avoidance and fostered a community-wide atmosphere where everyone learns disaster prevention and masters emergency evasion skills, embedding disaster reduction concepts deep in people’s minds. Huang Jiao, a teacher at Sanqingshan School, commented that the practical disaster survival knowledge acquired would strongly support future campus safety education and the dissemination of geological and meteorological hazard information.
Concluding the day’s agenda, a themed forum for the 2022 Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day was convened. Attendees stressed the need to capitalize on the May 12 observance to scale up public safety education and consolidate the regional disaster prevention and mitigation system.
