To fulfil the science education mission of geoparks, encourage public engagement with earth sciences and boost youngsters’ healthy development, eighteen Chinese UNESCO Global Geoparks plus two national geoparks (candidates for UNESCO designation) rolled out a package of preferential study-tour offers starting July 2022.
Led by the National Geopark Network Center, the initiative was jointly initiated by twenty geoparks including Danxiashan (Guangdong) and Yandangshan (Zhejiang) and ran from July through August, with some venues extending offers until late September. Targeted primarily at primary, secondary and university teachers and students, the campaign covered discounted or waived admission fees, live-streamed science lectures, study-tour promotions, as well as safety education on natural disasters.
During the promotion period, students of all schooling levels enjoyed free entry at numerous sites such as Danxiashan, Yandangshan, Sanqingshan (Jiangxi), Zhangjiajie (Hunan), Yimengshan (Shandong), Yuntaishan (Henan), Taining (Fujian) and Xiangxi (Hunan) and Kanbula (Qinghai). Yandangshan and Yuntaishan opened free admission to all visitors throughout July. Dunhuang (Gansu), Huangshan (Anhui), Leye-Fengshan (Guangxi), Longyan (Fujian), Shilin (Yunnan), Lushan (Jiangxi), Funiu Mountain (Henan), Dabieshan (Huanggang, Hubei) and Shennongjia (Hubei) offered half-price tickets for all tourists. All twenty participating geoparks granted complimentary or discounted entry to 2022 college entrance exam graduates alongside exclusive perks for on-site services including cruise rides, cable cars and sightseeing shuttles. Detailed terms were posted on each geopark’s official WeChat account and website (links attached at the end).
On the morning of July 10, the National Geopark Network Center hosted an online promotion conference for geopark study tours attended by over 80 science education institutes, travel agencies and media outlets. Certified study-tour instructors from each geopark hosted live broadcasts highlighting featured routes, introducing distinctive geological landforms and sharing geoscience knowledge. Throughout the summer vacation, the geoparks also ran safety workshops focused on meteorological and geological hazards, teaching self-rescue and evacuation skills to improve public emergency preparedness.
Spanning across China, the twenty participating geoparks feature diversified geomorphic types including Danxia landforms, volcanic formations and granite landscapes. They stretch across tropical, subtropical and temperate climatic zones with varied ecosystems and carry rich ethnic heritage of the Han, Yi, Yao, Tujia, Miao, Zhuang and Tibetan peoples, delivering high-quality experiential study programs and enriching the domestic summer study-tour market.
