On the afternoon of April 25, 2026, during the publicity week marking the 57th World Earth Day, Associate Professor Xu Kejian from the School of Economics and Management, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), led a student team to jointly launch the science popularization activity Celebrate the 57th World Earth Day: Sanqingshan UNESCO Global Geopark in Beijing together with Erlizhuang Retiree Community. The event offered local parent-child families an immersive experience blending geology, traditional culture and natural science.

The event focused on Sanqingshan UNESCO Global Geopark’s distinctive granite peak forest landforms, abundant ecological resources, profound Taoist culture and local folk customs. In plain and accessible language, Professor Xu narrated the marvelous geological evolution spanning hundreds of millions of years to parents and children. He also introduced cultural heritage sites including clusters of Taoist heritages within the geopark and Huaiyu Academy, alongside She ethnic minority traditions and folk customs represented by Hetang Wine, winning repeated rounds of applause.
During the tea-culture experience session, Professor Xu elaborated how high-altitude mist, unique climatic conditions and volcanic soil combine to produce premium Sanqingshan mountain tea. Participants later sampled the fresh, mellow local tea and savored the poetic charm of mist-shrouded tea plantations. The subsequent hands-on workshop brought the activity to its climax. Under the guidance of Liu Meichen, a postgraduate student majoring in design from the School of Gemmology, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), and children teamed up with their parents to design Sanqingshan-themed postcards and paint towering peaks, sea of clouds and ancient pines on stone slabs amid cheerful laughter.

By adopting an experiential approach of “easy to understand, delightful to taste and fun to create”, the event brought Sanqingshan’s spectacular geological wonders and profound cultural charms into the community and inspired children’s passion for exploring nature, cherishing homeland and protecting the Earth.
The in-depth integration of university expertise and community science outreach demands delivered an innovative and highly engaging program, which earned unanimous praise from both children and parents. It also enriched the scientific and humanistic ambiance of World Earth Day.
