‘Yuan’ refers to male bird while ‘Yang’ refers to female bird in Chinese, thus, ‘Yuanyang’ (Latin: Aix galericulata) is a compound word. It belongs to middle-sized Anatidae in Anseriformes. It is 38–45 cm in body length and 0.5 kg in weight. The female and male bird are different in color. As to male bird, its beak is red, legs are orange-yellow, feathers are bright and flashy with showy head plumage. There are broad white eyebrow stripes behind its eyes and a pair of chestnut yellow fan-shaped up-right feathers on its wings. As to female bird, its beak is black, legs are orange-yellow, head and the whole upper body are taupe. Around its eyes, the color is white with a thin white eyebrow stripe connected behind. It is a famous ornamental bird in China because they go with each other all the time as lovers, thus, they are often regarded as the symbol of love.
