From September 18 to 22, the 6th World Geoparks Conference, themed "Strengthening Connections—Linking People and the Earth in a Way Meaningful to Humanity," was held at Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark in St. John, Canada. More than 400 representatives from 74 Global Geoparks in 33 countries attended the conference. Yan Guozhong, a member of the Party Committee of Sanqing Mountain Scenic Area, and Zeng Xilai from the Geopark Administration, participated in the full agenda of the conference. The conference included sessions for Executive Board members, keynote speeches, thematic presentations, briefings and park voting for the UNESCO Global Geopark Network, site visits during the conference, poster exhibitions, the China Global Geoparks seminar, and the 10th-anniversary exhibition of China's Global Geoparks. This was the largest and most attended World Geoparks Conference to date.
Sanqing Mountain conducted special poster displays, exhibition panel explanations, expert visits, and peer discussions at the conference, showcasing the park's geological and geomorphological landscape values and management system to international peers and authoritative experts. The attendees showed strong interest in Sanqing Mountain's management system, management methods, and local community development, and praised the ways in which the management benefited residents. Meanwhile, experts provided many valuable suggestions for Sanqing Mountain, mainly in six areas: First, strengthen scientific research and management capacity, especially the training of professional staff; second, increase the park's domestic and international visibility and actively participate in international World Geoparks Conferences, seminars, and related training; third, enhance public relations and education, particularly science education for youth and promotion of sustainable development; fourth, create diverse and uniquely characteristic tourism products and souvenirs; fifth, continue to carry out substantive park activities rather than relying on remedial activities at a certain time; sixth, strengthen international exchanges and cooperation, establishing partnerships with more Global Geoparks.
Based on experts' suggestions and the advanced experiences of other Global Geoparks, in order to better prepare for the 2014 World Natural Heritage evaluation and the 2016 Global Geopark evaluation, Sanqing Mountain needs to work on the following areas:
First, increase investment and continue scientific research. On one hand, strengthen comparative studies, real-time monitoring, and sustained research work; on the other hand, establish long-term scientific research partnerships and seek technical support.
Second, enhance promotion and explore diversified publicity methods. Conduct varied educational activities for the public (tourists, local residents, students), especially science education for primary and secondary school students; produce various types of promotional materials and videos for different audiences with different purposes; create diverse tourism products and souvenirs; improve and enrich the English official website, which is essential for Sanqing Mountain's internationalization and presence on global search engines, and serves as an important way for international experts to learn about Sanqing Mountain.
Third, strengthen cooperation and establish international exchange platforms. To learn from more good international conservation concepts and management experiences and to obtain more international resources, we should enhance international exchanges and cooperation. Establish sister heritage site or sister park relationships, and develop mechanisms for mutual visits and resource sharing; invite well-known foreign experts and scholars to survey Sanqingshan and give lectures, hire renowned authorities in professional fields as technical advisors for Sanqingshan, and seek support and assistance from international technical forces; strive to host and actively participate in international conferences to promote the park.
