From December 14 to 16, 2021, the 9th UNESCO Global Geoparks Conference was held at Jeju Island Global Geopark in South Korea. Due to the pandemic, the conference was conducted in both online and offline formats.
The theme of the conference was 'Fun Geoparks,' and it included a series of activities such as the Global Geoparks Council meeting, the Global Geoparks Network General Assembly, the Global Geoparks Network Advisory Committee meeting, the Asia-Pacific Global Geoparks Network Coordination Committee meeting, educational seminars, a youth forum, special academic forums, an online exhibition, and a virtual tour. Among them, the special academic forums were divided into seven themes: sharing experiences and facing threats in mature geoparks, candidate geoparks, regional and international cooperation of global geoparks, public science education, protection and scientific research, sustainable tourism and community development, and climate change and geological disasters; there were also two special topics: geological diversity of the Korean Peninsula and the management of international multi-brand listing heritage sites. This was the first time that the Global Geoparks Conference included the management of multi-brand listing heritage sites as a dedicated topic.
Sanqing Mountain Global Geopark, as one of the 169 members of the Global Geoparks Network, participated in the special academic exchange sessions and the online exhibition.
The UNESCO Global Geoparks Conference is held every two years and is the highest-level meeting of the Global Geoparks Network. The previous eight conferences were held in China, the United Kingdom, Italy, and other countries. This conference was postponed from September 2020 due to the pandemic. The meeting provides a platform for global geoparks to communicate, promote mutual development, and jointly progress, helping various geoparks showcase their achievements and enhance international recognition.
