The Nanchang University is located in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, China. It is a comprehensive university featuring integration of arts, science, engineering and medicine, and combination of study, research, production and application. It is a key university under the national 211 Project, a university included in the National Construction Project for High-level University Graduates Studying Abroad, a key university in the Project for Enhancing the Comprehensive Strength of Universities in Central and Western Regions, one of the first pilot universities of the Ministry of Education’s Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, and a pilot university of the Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program. It also hosts the Nanchang University National University Science Park, one of China’s first 11 national university science parks for college students’ scientific and technological innovation and practice bases, and participates in the establishment of the Alliance of Universities in Central and Western Regions.

 

The Nanchang University’s history can be traced back to Jiangxi Public Medical School founded in 1921 and National Chung Cheng University established in 1940. In 1993, Jiangxi University and Jiangxi University of Technology merged to form Nanchang University. In 1997, the university was listed as a key university under the national 211 Project. In 2004, the Ministry of Education and the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province signed an agreement to jointly support Nanchang University. In 2005, Nanchang University merged with Jiangxi Medical College to form the new Nanchang University.

 

As of November 2025, the Nanchang University has 42 teaching units, covering 13 academic disciplines and offering 96 undergraduate programs. It is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in 27 first-level disciplines and 4 professional doctoral programs, with 18 postdoctoral research stations. It also offers master’s degrees in 50 first-level disciplines and 36 professional master’s programs.

 

Materials Science and Engineering is listed as a national Double First-Class construction discipline, and 6 disciplines are selected as provincial high-level and superior disciplines. 18 disciplines rank among the top 1% in the global ESI rankings, among which 2 disciplines are in the top 1‰ globally:

 

Agricultural Sciences (dominated by Food Science) ranks in the top 0.214%

Chemistry ranks in the top 0.987%. Food Science and Engineering ranks 8th in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities by Subject.

 

The Nanchang University has 4,240 on-the-job faculty members, including 3 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It has more than 36,200 full-time undergraduate students, including 994 international (overseas) students, and more than 20,590 graduate students of various types, including 78 international (overseas) students.
