Park Development History

In September 2005, Sanqingshan Geological Park was approved by the Ministry of Land and Resources as a National Geopark. In the same year, the Sanqingshan Management Committee officially launched the application process for Sanqingshan Global Geopark.

On March 3, 2007, Sanqingshan National Geopark officially unveiled its monument and opened to the public.

On July 8, 2008, at the 32nd World Heritage Conference held in Quebec, Canada, Sanqing Mountain was successfully inscribed on the World Heritage List, officially becoming China's seventh and Jiangxi's first World Natural Heritage site.

In January 2010, at the fourth batch of World Geopark applicant recommendation conferences held in Beijing, Sanqing Mountain was listed as China's 2012 World Geopark applicant unit.

In August 2011, Sanqing Mountain completed the preparation of the application documents for the World Geopark. After being signed by the Jiangxi Provincial People's Government, it was submitted to the Ministry of Land and Resources for review.

In October 2011, the Sanqingshan Party Committee and Management Committee established a leading group for the application for World Geopark inspection, fully launching the process.

On November 30, 2011, the mobilization meeting for Sanqingshan's application for the World Geopark inspection and rectification work was held, and the "Sanqingshan Application for the World Geopark Inspection Inspection Environmental Improvement Work Plan" was issued.

In December 2011, the Ministry of Land and Resources formally submitted the text materials for Sanqing Mountain's application for a Global Geopark to UNESCO for review.

On September 21, 2012, at the 11th World Geoparks Conference held in Aloka, Portugal, Sanqing Mountain was officially inscribed on the World Geopark Directory.

In September 2012, Sanqing Mountain established a sister park relationship with the Lesvos Petrified Forest World Geopark in Greece.

In May 2013, Sanqing Mountain and China Lushan Global Geopark became sister parks.

In March 2014, Sanqing Mountain established a sister park relationship with China's Zhangjiajie Global Geopark.

In June 2015, Sanqing Mountain established a sister park relationship with the Violcas-Ibor-Jara Global Geopark in Spain.

In August 2015, Sanqing Mountain and Canada's Stone Hammer Global Geopark became sister parks.

In October 2015, Sanqing Mountain and China Zhijin Cave Global Geopark became sister parks.

In March 2016, Sanqing Mountain and China Longhu Mountain Global Geopark became sister parks.

From August 2 to 4, 2016, UNESCO assessment experts Christine Longanis and Ilias Valyakos conducted a reassessment and inspection of Sanqingshan Global Geopark.

In September 2017, Sanqing Mountain submitted an application to UNESCO for expansion, increasing the area of the Sanqing Mountain Global Geopark to 433 km².

In September 2017, Sanqing Mountain and the Wangwu Mountain–Daimeishan Global Geopark became sister parks.

From July 10 to 13, 2018, UNESCO assessment experts Katherina Postimers and Hartmut Escher conducted an expansion assessment and inspection of Sanqingshan Global Geopark.

In August 2018, Sanqing Mountain and China Tianzhushan World Geopark became sister parks.

In March 2019, Sanqing Mountain and China Yandang Mountain World Geopark became sister parks.

On April 17, 2019, the UNESCO Executive Board meeting approved the application for expansion of the Sanqingshan UNESCO Global Geopark.

In October 2020, Sanqing Mountain and China Leye-Fengshan Global Geopark became sister parks.

In April 2021, Sanqing Mountain and the Cangshan Global Geopark in Dali became sister parks.

In March 2022, Sanqing Mountain and China Jiuhua Mountain World Geopark became sister parks.

In April 2023, Sanqing Mountain and China Wugong Mountain World Geopark became sister parks.

In July 2023, Sanqing Mountain and China's Linxia Global Geopark became sister parks.

In December 2023, Sanqing Mountain established a sister park relationship with China's Enshi Grand Canyon - Tenglong Cave Global Geopark.

In 2023, the innovative implementation of the "Seven Staff Integrated" grid-based management mechanism ensured that visitor needs were addressed first-line, and tourists' opinions were handled first-line, and with the top score, it was successfully recognized as one of the first batch of Jiangxi "Scenic Spots with Unique Scenery."

In March 2025, Sanqingshan established the "Travel Xiao Er" global service platform, successfully selected as one of the "Top 100 Cultural Tourism Brands Going Global in 2025," setting up 10 sub-centers in Beijing, Xi'an, Harbin, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, promoting international services and brand expansion of scenic spots.

In April 2025, the first episode of CCTV's large-scale cultural exploration program "Treading Songs" focused on Sanqing Mountain, showcasing the fusion charm of geological wonders and Taoist culture.

In 2025, Sanqing Mountain will officially open and operate the Port Head Cableway during the May Day holiday, marking a major upgrade from the park from a "two-point, one-line" to a "full-area loop."

In November 2025, Mount Sanqing held the 10th Sanqing Mountain Cloud Trail Race, creating a benchmark event that integrates 'sports, geology, and tourism,' and was rated as one of the 'Top 100 National AAAAA Tourist Attractions in 2025,' further consolidating its status as a model mountain-type scenic area.  

In January 2026, the Yu Jing Peak Scenic Area of Mount Sanqing (altitude 1,819.9 meters) officially opened to the public, fully accessible for the first time in 40 years, becoming a new landmark of the geopark and a core spot for sunrise viewing.
